Celtics 2019-20 schedule: Boston will travel more miles than any East team

The Boston Celtics will have plenty of time to bond high above the Earth this season.

The NBA released its 2019-20 regular season schedule Monday, giving us the dates and times for each team's 82-game slate. The Celtics will play just as many road games (41) as the other teams this season, but no club in the Eastern Conference will travel more miles than Boston during the upcoming campaign.

Why are the Celtics traveling so many miles?

One explanation is they will make three different trips to the state of Texas. Instead of playing the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks on the same road trip, the C's will play these Texas clubs on separate trips.

The Celtics play the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers on separate trips as well. Last season, the C's played the Lakers and Clippers on the same road trip with back-to-back games at the Staples Center in March. Next season, the C's play the Clippers in Los Angeles in November as part of an early-season West Coast swing that includes the Golden State Warriors. They play the Lakers on the road as part of the league's Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday schedule in January.

The Celtics were 21-20 on the road last season, so there's plenty of room there for improvement. The schedule makers didn't do the C's many favors, though. Boston has to overcome a rigorous travel schedule as it attempts to remain among the top contenders in the East.

C'è anche una versione con colori differenti fra East e West.

Spicca molto il fatto che le top per miglia viaggiate sono dell'Ovest con Boston nel mezzo a fare da pecora nera, mentre quelle dell'Est sono quasi tutte nella parte bassa, coi Lakers a fare da eccezione.

ESPN projects Boston Celtics will finish No. 2 in the Eastern Conference, based on advanced statistics

The Boston Celtics were picked to be one of the best teams in the NBA last year, but they finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 49-33 -- a far cry from the most optimistic projects, and significantly below even some of the more pessimistic ones.

ESPN’s Real Plus-Minus was more reasonable than some last season, but still overshot the mark -- picking Boston for 58 wins and first in the Eastern Conference. This season, Kevin Pelton -- who oversees the RPM projections -- picked the Celtics to be the No. 2 team in the East behind only the Milwaukee Bucks, which is a bit of a surprise given the amount of talent that walked this offseason.

It’s probably worth noting that Nos. 2-5 in the East per Pelton’s projections (Boston, Philadelphia, Orlando (!) and Toronto) all are within three wins of one another. Still, according to Pelton, Boston could be solid on both ends of the floor. The Celtics are projected to finish in the top 10 in both offense and defense, the latter of which is especially impressive given the lack of big depth on the roster (presumably, , and other wing defenders help make up the difference).

Pelton’s model attempts to take a lot of different variables into account, including games played (which is one of the reasons the 76ers finish below Boston). But the Celtics recovered impressively from the disastrous start to their offseason -- well enough that they project better than the narrative suggests.
