Celtics offer contract to former Lakers draft pick (report)
By Brian Robb |
brobb@masslive.comThe Celtics are still on the hunt to add to their 15-man roster after waiving Justin Champagne on Tuesday. A new report indicates Boston is considering adding an experienced shooter on the wing to help fill out their depth chart.
According to Greek Publication Sports DNA, Boston has offered Svi Mykhailiuk a contract for the 2023-24 season. The 26-year-old is also weighing overseas offers according to the report, including joining Panathinaikos.
Mykhailiuk split his time last season with the Hornets and Knicks and has bounced around the NBA since being drafted by the Lakers in 2018. At 6-foot-7, he provides some good size at the wing and he played well with the Hornets during the final two months of last year, averaging 10.6 points while shooting 40.4 percent from 3-point range.
Mykhailiuk’s 3-point shooting percentage for his career (36 percent) has been middle of the road, which has led to him playing for six different teams since 2018 since he offers little on the defensive end. However, with
’s emphasis on 3-point shooting rate, Mykhailiuk would fill the bill on that front as 63 percent of his field goal attempts in the NBA have come beyond the arc.
hinted last month the team is still looking to add to the roster even before the team opened up another roster spot this week
“I think we’ll try to add obviously a little bit,” Stevens said during Summer League. “I’d like to get a little more depth, maybe on the wing, and then also maybe with a 4/3 type. I feel pretty good about our bigs. We’ve got a couple two ways, so we’ve got some things we’re still very much looking at.”
Boston has two open roster spots and two non-guaranteed contracts on the 15-man roster so the team still has plenty of roster flexibility to add along with one open roster spot. Boston also acquired a pair of second-round picks and a $6.2 million trade exception in exchange for dealing away restricted free agent
to the Mavericks last month. The team’s current guards include

“We’re in a unique position obviously where, when we traded, we weren’t going to take much back,” Stevens said of the Williams trade. “But I do think it’ll be a good opportunity for him and it gives us some flexibility here as we move forward.”
