Domenica potevamo vincere a Buffalo...

Messaggio Re: NFL
Da boston globe

It’s been an encouraging rookie year for Drake Maye, who has played far better than almost anyone anticipated.

The 3-13 Patriots have one last, meaningless game to slog through, home Sunday against the Bills. Neither team has much to play for, with the Patriots long eliminated from playoff contention, and the Bills having locked up the No. 2 seed in the AFC.

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo was asked Monday morning if he has given thought to sitting rookie quarterback Drake Maye for the finale.

“I would say right now, everything is in consideration, and we’ll see how the week goes,” Mayo said.

Mayo hasn’t made many right decisions in his first year as head coach, but Patriots fans should be encouraged that he left the door open.

Because Maye needs to sit on Sunday. He has no business being on the field in Week 18.

It would be coaching malpractice to send him out there in a meaningless game. There’s nothing but downside — the chance of injury, and the chance to lose the No. 1 overall draft pick.

I argued this point on Twitter/X Sunday night, and a longtime Patriots reporter whom I respect greatly responded that Maye needs to play “because he’s one of 53.” I get that sentiment, and certainly a big part of building a culture is holding every player accountable and to the same standards.

But let’s be real, Maye is not one of 53. He’s one of one. Maye is The Franchise, the centerpiece of the team’s future and the guy needed to rescue the Patriots from their post-Tom Brady despair.

Maye needs to be protected for the sake of the franchise. His season needs to be over with.

It’s been an encouraging rookie year for Maye, who has played far better than almost anyone anticipated. It didn’t show up in the results, with Maye carrying a 1-9 record in games he started and finished. But playing on the worst roster in the NFL, Maye proved to be the one thing the Patriots got right this year.

Rebuilding back into a playoff contender won’t be easy, but pretty much everyone around the NFL agrees — the Patriots at least have found their quarterback.

The Patriots also are on the verge of accomplishing one of the most important objectives of Maye’s rookie season: keeping him healthy. The worst outcome for the Patriots is Maye spending his offseason rehabbing an injury. They need him healthy, training, and improving his game.

Frankly, the Patriots are lucky that Maye is a team player and didn’t find an injury excuse to check out of the season a few weeks ago. It probably would have been a smart business decision given that Maye already proved his worth, and the Patriots have been eliminated for a month.

Now that the finish line is in sight, Maye needs to sit. There is nothing he is going to accomplish Sunday in a glorified preseason game that he hasn’t already accomplished in 11 starts.

The risk of injury is simply too great. The Patriots’ offensive line is a mess and won’t get any better on Sunday. And Maye’s style of play puts him at risk — he scrambles, he puts his body on the line, and he doesn’t always avoid hits like he should. Maye needs to be protected from himself.

Maye already got one concussion while scrambling earlier this year, and had to take a concussion test this past Saturday after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. Maye had every reason to sit out the rest of Saturday’s meaningless game, but he wanted back in.

Mayo said Monday that Maye wasn’t in the concussion protocol, but he also hadn’t seen Maye yet on Monday. Players sometimes don’t develop symptoms until a day or two later.

“If our guys are out there, I want to be out there with them,” Maye said Saturday. “Shoot, may see something that may help us next week out there.”

Other reasons to sit Maye: It would also be better for the Patriots’ long-term outlook to get the No. 1 draft pick, which they will lock up with a loss to Buffalo. And Sunday is a good opportunity to elevate rookie quarterback Joe Milton to the game-day roster for the first time and get him in a game. It could be valuable experience for a player who may be the primary backup next year, and also serve as a showcase to pump up Milton’s trade value for a year or two from now.

“That’s absolutely a possibility,” Mayo said of playing Milton on Sunday. “Like I said earlier, all things are under consideration.”

There’s probably a strong part of Mayo that is motivated to play Maye and go for the win. With six straight losses and fans calling for his job, Mayo badly needs a win to go out on the right note. Mayo implied that most players are going to play Sunday.

“My expectation is if the guys are healthy, then they’re expected to be ready to go out there and play. We’ll have to see how the week goes,” Mayo said. “The guys are working hard, and we need to play football.”

And Mayo already has shown questionable judgment with Maye, keeping him in Saturday’s blowout loss far longer than he should have, especially given Maye’s concussion test earlier in the game.

“Look, we’re trying to develop a quarterback, and he wants to play. He’s a competitor,” Mayo said Saturday.

If Mayo isn’t strong enough to tell Maye he needs to sit, then the Krafts need to find a coach who will. And if Mayo’s judgment is too clouded by his own motivations to see that sitting Maye on Sunday is the best decision for the organization, the Krafts need to take the decision away from him. Maye getting hurt this Sunday should be a fireable offense.

The fact that Mayo didn’t shut the door on sitting Maye is promising. It is a sign that Mayo is thinking clearly and has the team’s best interests in mind over his own.

Because there is no question that sitting Maye Sunday is the best move for the franchise. He has nothing left to prove. Mayo needs to sit Maye down and tell him, “We’ll see you in 2025.”

Jerod Mayo licenziato. Dopo la W contro i Bills che è costata anche la prima scelta al draft …

Sembra che salterà anche il resto del coaching staff.

Ieri era imperativo perdere e abbiamo fatto di tutto per vincere.
Mossa suicida e Mayo viene cacciato secondo me neanche troppo ingiustamente.

Patriots in versione Tafazzi.
